A growing interest in BMX, FMX and specialist off-road bikes used on ski slopes during the summer months inspired North Legion to develop a modified children’s snow-racer for performing cycle tricks on snow.

Function has been the primary focus during the development of the final product – the North Legion MERC.

The jury's verdict:

The North Legion MERC – or SMX – is an impressive product brimming with identity and distinctive features! The product has uncompromising details and is fantastically well thought through. Structural design challenges have been solved perfectly. The product’s expression, one of unmistakable speed and excitement, creates clear associations to BMX and motocross.

The core of the product is its patented parallel motion system, which mechanically copies the movements of a downhill skier. In addition, the designers have also transferred the carving turn principle to three skis while retaining good balance. Should the rider fall off, an emergency brake will be triggered which collapses the frame and overturns the SMX so that it stops on its own. The SMX is also designed for safe use in ski-lifts.

The product has full suspension, and every cycle trick can be transferred to snow. Last but not least, the designers have had been particularly successful in achieving a uniform and targeted profile, which helps build a strong sense of solidarity among its users. Currently the SMX has no competitors.
