Bernt Erik Rossavik, Art Director at Laerdal Medical
Laerdal Medical’s motto is “Helping save lives”. Previously, Laerdal Medical primarily developed medical equipment for developed countries.
To support the UN’s Millennium Development Goals to reduce global infant mortality by two thirds between 1990 and 2015, Laerdal Medical wanted to use its expertise to develop a simple and inexpensive training doll and simulator for birth assistants in developing countries.
NeoNatalie Newborn Simulator teaches birth assistants in developing countries basic resuscitation techniques for newborns. The doll is inexpensive and therefore affordable for many people. Laerdal has made intelligent and life-saving choices: only features that are important for training have been prioritised.
The doll has a realistic size and weight. It can cry and breathe, and you can feel a palpable pulse in its navel. The instructor can control this using small squeeze bulbs. Good use of materials and a solid, compact case make the doll durable and easy to transport. Icons, illustrations and photos are culturally adapted to users. This is a comprehensive project that not only brings life to the teaching situation but also to the world.
