When the drill string is retracted from a borehole, drilling mud is spilled on deck. The mud makes the deck slippery and poses a danger to safety onboard, as well as being an environmental problem.

The contaminants in the mud mean it has to be collected, transported away and cleaned. 2K Tools saw a need for a system that could clean the drill string internally so that the drilling mud stays in the borehole when the drill string is retracted.

Design in unfamiliar areas

DSIWS provides an intelligent, thorough solution to an environmental problem. DSIWS reduces drilling mud on the decks of drilling rigs by cleaning the inside of the drill string. A design approach has been used every step of the way and has resulted in a consistent product right down to handling, shipping and graphic details.

The primary colours of rust, black and white and the secondary colour grey have been used throughout the materials to show the contrast between that which is clean and the drilling fluid. The jury praised the company’s consideration of the whole system, including hire, transportation, storage and handling. The Drill String Internal Wiper System stands out as being very well thought out and functional.
