CASE ABYSS is not a consumer product and will not be resold to other companies. It is used to gather seismic data which SeaBed Geophysical sells to its customers.

CASE Abyss devices are stored onboard a seismic ship before they are lowered down 3,000 metres deep to collect the seismic data. SeaBed's customers include national and international oil companies.

Jury`s verdict

Using industrial design throughout the whole product development process has given SeaBed Geophysical a clear competitive edge in its industry. The seismic sensor can be produced at a reasonable price. It is smaller and lighter. It can also be stacked and is clearly better in terms of its ergonomic features compared to previous products. Ships can take onboard more than twice as many devices. This means that they can generate data faster and better than rivals. CASE Abyss has a tough, maritime identity which is appropriate to the segment.

The bright yellow colour, the gentle anatomical transitions into shapes, such as a protective housing, along with the clarity of functions through using contrasts in shape, choice of material and colour, give the product a professional maritime identity, which is suited to the segment. The product has changed from being just a black box to becoming a sales argument and tool when the company needs to explain the system to its customers. This will give the company a competitive edge at trade shows and at other venues where the product is on show.
