Remote control for audiovisual installations.

The designer’s idea behind the Modal remote control is to render superfluous many of the remote controls we have in our homes. The product’s target group consists of users who are not especially interest in or knowledgeable about technology, but who wish to use digital media. The remote control must therefore be easy to use and give the user a sense of control on his or her own terms.

The jury’s verdict:
Modal is capable of replacing most of the remote controls in the home and should appeal to a very broad group of users. While conventional remote controls can have as many as 50 buttons, Modal has a single central wheel. The structure of the content is designed so that the user can adapt the Modal remote control to her own style. It is also based on a known user interface, and should be easy to learn. The remote is innovative, with possibilities for further development. New services on television, such as menu controls, are well suited to the remote control. The product’s style is well thought through and the product has an attractive appearance. Modal’s ergonomics and tactile feel are especially good; the user will want to hold this product in her hand.
