Welcome to a Design Breakfast focusing on design research and user involvement in design processes.
To see their products with the eyes of others can be useful for many companies.Door and window manufacturer NorDan has made many positive experiences after having conducted a user focused idea process in cooperation with Kadabra Product Design in Norway and RCA Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design in London.
NorDan located on Moi in Rogaland is one of the largest in Scandinavia in its market with 1,200 employees and revenues of a half billion. In anticipation of the new requirements for windows (‘Byggteknisk Forskrift’) which were launched in Norway on July 1st 2010 placing an emphasis on usability and safety for the end user, the company saw the need to gain access to a new professional network and test their products. For this reason, they sought funds from the Norwegian Design Council’s program Design Pilot in 2009 and received 250,000 NOK to find out how users can provide new perspectives to product development.
Through the Norwegian Design Council’s Program Innovation for All, and their strategic cooperation with RCA Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, NorDan got to work with experts on design research and inclusive design. The result has been new thinking on opening and closing mechanisms, as well as ideas about exciting new features the company had never imagined in a window.
Project Window for All and the implementation of a user focused idea process will be presented by Director Johannes Rasmussen in NorDanJørgen Solstad and Jan Walther Parr in Kadabra Product Design, as well as Senior Associate Catherine Green, RCA Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design.
